CIRCLE SCORE
Concept Overview:
The "Circle Score" is a unique musical composition format by Tetsuro Hoshii in 2024, consisting of four measures of music arranged in a circular structure. This innovative design allows the music to be played with no defined beginning or end. Musicians can initiate their performance at any point on the circle and conclude at any location, creating an open-ended and dynamic musical experience. As they play, musicians will rotate slowly around the circle to read the score, further enhancing the visual and auditory flow of the performance.
I have composed six pieces using the Circle Score format. The first piece employs conventional music notation, while the subsequent pieces incorporate abstract drawings and paintings. These abstract elements invite musicians to interpret the score creatively, offering a departure from traditional musical performances and fostering an environment of artistic exploration.
The initial presentation of this project was met with enthusiasm, with the music being recognized as both innovative and captivating. I plan to further develop this project in New York, expanding its scope and impact.
Instrumentation:
The instrumentation for Circle Score is flexible, allowing for a wide range of musical voices. However, performers must be able to move with their instruments, as mobility is an integral part of the performance. Additionally, maintaining a consistent tempo is crucial, necessitating the inclusion of a percussionist to anchor the ensemble.

I developed this work during my residency in Norway, this piece allows multiple musicians to read through traditional notation, or interpret abstract signs, allowing each musician to start and finish wherever they choose, creating a unique auditory landscape.
